This expedition lasted four days in 2017, involving a small group of approximately seven individuals accompanied by our indigenous guide, Wiwa. The Wiwa are one of the four indigenous communities residing in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region. Ciudad Perdida, also referred to as Teyuna and Buritaca-200, is an archaeological site that represents an ancient city located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, within the Santa Marta municipality. It is believed that this city was established around 800 AD, making Ciudad Perdida approximately 650 years older than Machu Picchu. The site features a series of 169 terraces intricately carved into the mountainside, a network of paved roads, and several small circular plazas. Access to the site requires climbing 1,200 stone steps through a dense jungle environment.
Upon reaching the archaeological site after ascending the 1,200 stone steps, you must pass through a security checkpoint manned by the Colombian Army, which is responsible for safeguarding the area.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a distinct mountain range located in northern Colombia, set apart from the Andes, which traverse the northern part of the country. With a peak elevation of 5,700 meters situated merely 42 kilometers from the Caribbean coastline, the Sierra Nevada stands as the tallest coastal range in tropical regions and ranks among the highest coastal ranges globally.
