La Rioja - Spain April 2022
During my visit to La Rioja, Spain, in 2022, I encountered the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The Los Picaos are public acts of penance associated with the Christian faith that take place in this town. In the Christian processions and Stations of the Cross, members of the Cofradía de la Santa Vera Cruz de San Vicente, a confraternity of penitents, engage in self-flagellation using a discipline as a voluntary expression of their faith; these individuals are referred to as disciplinantes. This tradition is believed to have originated in the late 15th or early 16th century and has since been associated with the Cofradía de la Santa Vera Cruz in the area. On March 20, 1799, there was an unsuccessful attempt to abolish this tradition, which was being practiced privately at the time. The clergy in Spain held this practice in high regard, as it was believed to grant indulgences. In 1998, the tradition was designated as a Regional Tourist Interest. The process to achieve National Tourist Interest status began in January 2004 and was successfully completed in February 2005.
